FAQ

+ What ages do you tutor?

I tutor children from all primary age groups.

+ What is your experience?

I am a qualified primary school teacher with eight years' experience, teaching a P6 class full-time for over three years in County Down, and a P3 class full-time for three years in an international school in Madrid. I also taught as a substitute teacher for two years across nine Belfast schools, covering every primary age-group.

+ What is your approach?

My first priority is to make the child feel comfortable. One of my strengths as a teacher is the ability to adapt my teaching style to a wide range of personalities. I know the appropriate amount of humour required to maintain attention. I know how to praise success in a meaningful and specific manner. No true teaching success is possible without first understanding the child.

+ Have you been police checked?

Yes. I have completed an AccessNI criminal record check and can share my certificate with you digitally upon request, or show a hard copy before the first tuition session begins.

+ How much do the tuition sessions cost?

One-to-one sessions cost £25. Transfer test group sessions cost £40. Video feedback, using the Seesaw app and QR code given out during the sessions, is included in these prices.

+ Can I avail of any discounts?

Yes. There are two package deals for one-to-one tuition: Pay for 9, Get 10 and Pay for 16, Get 20. If you choose one of these packages you will receieve a code that allows you to book the relevant amount of classes. Upon payment you will have 120 days to book the sessions. There is also a Pay for 5, Get 6 deal for the group sessions.

+ How do I pay?

All payments must be made online when booking a session or sessions. Our calendar-based booking system uses Stripe as its secure payment platform. All major credit/debit cards are accepted, as well as there being a PayPal facility.

+ What is your refund/cancellation policy?

Catapult Tuition does not offer refunds, except in the case of the tutor having to cancel a session.

Upon booking you will receive a confirmation email in which there is a link to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

Rescheduling can be done free of charge up to 24 hours before the appointment. You may not reschedule less than 24 hours before the appointment.

If you do not have a new date in mind for rescheduling, then click the cancel link, contact me and I will forward a credit code to you which may be used at your convenience. Clients who cancel less than 24 hours before an appointment will not receive a credit code.

+ How long do the tuition sessions last?

One-to-one sessions last for 50 minutes. Transfer Test group sessions last for two hours.

+ When are the sessions?

With regards to one-to-one sessions, there are six consecutive slots, each lasting 50 minutes: commencing at 2.30pm, 3.30pm, 4.30pm, 5.30pm, 6.30pm and 7.30pm. Four further slots are available on Saturday afternoons: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. More daily slots will be available during school holidays. Transfer Test group sessions are on Saturdays at 10am.

+ Where do the sessions take place?

The tuition takes place at my office in the Portview Trade Centre: Office A104, Portview Trade Centre, 310 Newtownards Road, Belfast BT4 1HE.

+ What format do the one-to-one sessions take?

The parent will have informed me of specific or general areas of learning to be covered in advance. A learning goal is then agreed upon at the start of each session. The student and I investigate what they already know and build upon this with new information. We test this out in the most effective way (using online resources, using practical resources, pencil and paper activities - whatever works best), with the student constantly feeding back their thoughts to me.

I will have prepared several main activities before the session and will then select the most appropriate one, based upon my observations during the session. The student attempts this activity independently while I analyse their efforts, only intervening if I see that further guidance is necessary.

We finally discuss how the session has gone, in light of the learning goal, and consider what needs to be done next. The student will have been given a QR code to share with the parent. This QR code can be scanned through the free Seesaw app, and will link to a video in which I discuss what was covered in the session, making suggestions about strategies or further practice.

+ What format do the Transfer Test group sessions take?

These two-hour sessions consist of a Literacy hour and a Maths hour (with a short break in between). Themes will change on a weekly basis based upon the students' learning needs. Parents will be made aware of their child's progress via the free video feedback using the the free Seesaw app.

+ Will you call off a Transfer Test group session due to a lack of numbers?

No. Even if you are the only parent to book a particular Transfer Test group session, the class is guaranteed to go ahead. The cost and format will not change. Your child will simply receive more attention!

+ Can my child practise for the Transfer Tests in a one-to-one weekday session?

Absolutely! We can hone in on specific types of question where your child needs support. Alternatively, you could book back-to-back weekday sessions, enabling us to recreate the format of the Saturday group sessions.

+ Can I be present during the sessions?

Yes. You may have good reason to wish to be present:

  • Your child may feel more comfortable with your presence.
  • You may wish to ensure that the needs of your child are being appropriately addressed and that your expectations are being met.

Your peace of mind is of the utmost importance to me. In one-to-one sessions you are welcome to sit at the table with us or to use the seated area at the entrance to the office, where you can help yourself to tea, coffee and snacks. Free WiFi is also available.

+ How will I be kept informed of my child's progress?

First of all, I will give initial brief feedback at the end of each session. Secondly, you will be able to see your child's progress in more depth through their Catapult folder: a record of all the work they complete in each session, which they keep at home and bring along to each class.

Finally, and most importantly, you will receive video feedback from me on your child's progress within two days of each completed session. The video is accessed using the free Seesaw app and a QR code that your child will give to you. In this video I will make comments about your child's progress and demonstrate any strategies for further improvement. If you are unable or unwilling to use this app, please let me know and I will arrange another way to get this detailed feedback to you.
